Getting Started

One month to go, Christmas is over so now it's downhill all the way to the 26th January (7.00 am from Heathrow to Eritrea via Franfurt). We've had most of our jabs (still regretting the cholera!) and just have to sort out the house and the packing and the storage and the money ..........

We're both going to be working in VSO placements for the Ministry of Education in the capital, Asmara. I'll be working on the secondary school English curriculum, Phil on the IT training and support, at least that's what we've been told, we've also been told that that job descriptions can change once you get there so who knows.

We're hoping to get out into the countryside at some point but as we'll be based in Asmara I'll concentrate on that for the moment. Built by the Italians in an art deco style it's unlike anywhere else in Africa. An Introduction to Asmara will give you a quick overview. There's also a very interesting BBC radio program, Reviving Asmara (click on the play link when you get to the article). Its about 40 minutes, but well worth listening to.
